About
Alexa Rose, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon with subspecialty fellowship training in pediatrics. Prior to moving to Miami with her daughter and two dogs, she was in private practice in San Diego. She had the honor of being elected by her peers to the position of Chief of Neurosurgery then proceeded to be elected as Chief of Surgery at Scripps Mercy Hospital. This Level I trauma center in the heart of San Diego focused on serving the immigrant and underprivileged patients with the highest quality care. Dr. Rose was also elected as Chief of Neurosurgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, which is also a Level I trauma center and stroke center.
In addition to treating patients with brain tumors, intracerebral hemorrhages, hydrocephalus and spinal pathology she also had special interest in welcoming residents into the OR. Dr. Rose enjoys guiding students from high school and college along the pathway to becoming a neurosurgeon. Dr. Rose previously worked at the University of California Los Angeles and within the managed care model of Kaiser at multiple locations throughout southern California. She has also served as a physician volunteer with Project Medishare in Haiti and hopes that returning to Miami will allow her to be more involved with medical missions. She is an active member of Women in Neurological Surgery, The California Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
She has previously been known as Dr. Reeves Smith. She speaks Spanish and welcomes all patients to her new practice in South Florida. Dr. Rose provides a compassionate and understanding approach to each patient's individual health care issues.

A story behind one very important nursing cap…
Dr. Rose's grandmother inspired her from an early age to go into medicine. Mildred Latourette, R.N. attended nursing school on full scholarship, and this is her nursing cap from the graduation ceremony. She was a member of the inaugural class at Glendale Adventist Medical Center.
Mementos of her father…
Dr. Rose's father was an orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in hand surgery. These are some his own personal surgical instruments she keeps as mementos of her father.
Mother’s powerful influence…
Dr. Rose's mother studied English literature in college and is a pediatrician and attorney. She influenced her daughter to study history in college, and Dr. Rose has authored many articles and chapters in text books such as pictured here.
Featured Patient Cases
Daryn was walking home in the evening with groceries when he was struck by a bus. He underwent an emergent bifrontal hemicraniectomy and after a great neurologic recovery had a bifrontal cranioplasty. He is returning to his studies in graphic design, and one would never know unless he showed you his scar. His parents are very thankful his son survived and thrived after such a serious accident.
Luca's mother, an icu nurse drove her son into the hospital herself. He had very severe headache and imaging revealed a large bleeding mass. After emergency surgery, the arteriovenous malformation was confirmed to be completely gone on angiography. He has recovered well and returned not just to his studies but also to rock climbing and crafting custom denim jeans.
Chris, a star football player dove into a pool and sustained a cervical spine injury. After emergency surgery to decompress and stabilize his spine, he recovered and walked out of his rehabilitation program. He returned to his studies and just returned from a trip to Tokyo.
Unfortunately, after delaying his wisdom teeth removal Simy, had an infection that traveled to his brain. He was unable to speak as the abscess formed in one of his speech centers. Thankfully, after Dr. Rose performed surgery, his speech returned, and he made a full recovery.
Annie had posterior fossa surgeries for tumor resection and shunt placement as a child, however as an adult she began to experience severe headaches, hearing loss and ambulation issues. After multiple opinions, she came to Dr. Rose. After a simple valve replacement shunt surgery, she is back to caring for beloved horses and headache-free.
